The beauty of the Matakana Coast is well-known on the New Zealand North Island, offering easy access to beaches, islands, bays, reefs and rock pools. Each Matakana coastal area has its own distinctive features which allow visitors to experience a wide range of New Zealand’s natural beauty within a leisurely driving distance.
The Puhoi to Pakiri coastline is home to some of the most amazing world class beaches, and beach-hopping is among the favorite things to do for Matakana Country Lodge guests.
You don’t have to go far from the Matakana Country Lodge to find a beach that suits your requirements and often you could have the beach to yourselves. It doesn’t get much better than that!
Garth is an expert on the coastline as he spent many hours sailing in this region. He will be only too happy to point you in the right direction.
If surfing is your thing we suggest Tawharanui, Omaha or Pakiri – dependent on which way the wind is blowing. For the more subdued you have the choice of Snell’s Beach, Brick Bay, Campbell’s Beach, Buckleton Beach, Algies Bay and Martin’s Bay to name a few.
Matheson’s Bay is non-tidal so you can swim all day and there are excellent rock pools, filled with kina (sea urchins) and other sea life. You can walk out on the reef at low tide and if you are lucky, find a fossil or two.
If beaches aren’t your thing, why not spend the day relaxing beside the swimming pool at the Lodge? In the summer months the water is generally between 25 & 30 degrees celsius. Click here to see photos of our swimming pool, heated spa pool and other Lodge amenities >>
